Christian Marclay: “Phonodrum”

From the album Records (1981-1989)

A noisy little treat from turntable pioneer Christian Marclay, whose first experiments with vinyl date from the late 70s.  Marclay’s music only rarely features a strong, danceable beat.  Its sound is something of a mix between industrial punk, musique concrete, and Looney Tunes.

According to Peter Shapiro’s article “Deck Wreckers: The Turntable as Instrument,” “Phonodrum” was created “by dragging a guitar string attached to the stylus across wooded records and wooden discs studded with nails.” (Quoted in Undercurrents: The Hidden Wiring of Modern Music, p. 171.)

Played 230 time(s).
